How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

Mercedes-Benz EV Charging

Electric car charging time varies depending upon which time of EV chargers you’re using, as well as the type of vehicle you’re driving in Toronto. Let’s take a look at the three main types of domestic and public chargers that there are. Then, if you have questions, you’d like to test drive the all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS in Whitby, contact Mercedes-Benz Durham!

Electric Car Charging Times

  1. Level 1 Home Charger: This charger will take 24 hours or more to charge your EV. The plus side is that you can charge your vehicle without any prep work. Just plug your charging cable adapter into any three-pronged 110V/120V outlet in your garage, and you’re good to go. Level 1 chargers are good for passively building a charge in the background while you’re lounging around the house, but you’ll chiefly rely on public chargers.
  2. Level 2 Home Chargers: Level 2 Chargers can charge your vehicle from 10% to 80% in an afternoon. If you’d like to do most of your charging from home, Level 2 charging is for you. The downside is that you’ll need to hire an electrician to install a 240V+ outlet in your garage and have it directly wired into your power panel. There’s also a chance that you’ll need to upgrade your power panel if it isn’t compatible.
  3. Level 2 and Level 3 Public Charging: Public charging stations are either Level 2 chargers or Level 3 DC fast chargers. Level 2 chargers can typically take 8 hours to get a full charge. While we don’t recommend using Level 2 public chargers for going from 0-100%, they’re excellent for topping off your vehicle, or grabbing several commutes worth of electric kilometres in 45 minutes. Level 3 DC fast charger, can take you from 0 to 80% in 15 to 40 minutes, depending on what time of vehicle you drive, and 0 to 100% in about an hour.
